It's amazing how efficient one can be on their 7th or 8th play through. Within an hour and a half I'd already made over 2000 caps, retrieved Dogmeat, and blew up Megaton.
Damn I love that game

The only game where I accidentally picked up a fork in the middle of town and was immediately ripped to shreds for 'theft'. I can't begin to express all my love for the Fallout series.

Bethesda games usually get three runthroughs by me; Good Guy, Bad Guy, and Id Runs Amok.
You can probably guess what those entail.

It's only the second time I've ever chosen that option.
Every time I do it I regret it too. I'm going to stick with it this time, but saving Megaton is so much better . The Megaton house is better, Megaton is in a better location, and the Tenpenny people are assholes. I'm strongly considering stealing all their shit then unleashing the ghouls on them.

PC MASTER RACE
Seriously, I had it on PS3. It was buggy and annoying sometimes. I bought it on steam a few years ago, never looked back. It looks better, it works better, it's better. And since my TV is hooked up to my big screen and 7.1 sound system, it's like playing a super console.

I can't help but be good. I try to be bad, but I end up being good anyways.
This playthrough I'm going for melee weapons. I've never done a melee weapon focused character before.

I played when I first got my PS3, was terribly impatient and tried to rush into things beyond my level, quit.
Picked it up TWO YEARS LATER and spent two weeks on it, was tearing through things but suddenly found myself in the final sequence of the game and had saved at a point where I could not escape the ending! I was furious, threw my controller and quit.
I should pick it up again.

I have a hard time deciding if I like 3 or New Vegas better. New Vegas plays closer to the original Fallout, in terms of how the story is dictated, but it requires a lot more time for it to really become fun (I'll admit, taking the long way around the map Because Thou Must is a bit surreal, and boring).
However, if one plays their cards right with it, it is possible to break the storyline progression, specifically around one character that you are intended to meet in a town for the first time. However, if you take a chance and bypass the town (through a much harder shortcut), it is possible to meet the character elsewhere for the first time, and then if you go back to the town, the whole dialog changes. (Also can be changed if you have a perk that you get later on, and then go back).
Fallout 3 doesn't give you as many multiple paths, but I do much prefer the custom weapons over the mod mechanism that replaced it in New Vegas.
That said, I much prefer the NV addons. Specifically Honest Hearts and Old World Blues.

I never found myself as invested in the New Vegas storyline or quests. I played through the story, I put 20-30 hours or more into the game, so it's not like I hated it but I enjoyed 3 more. I need to give New Vegas another chance sometime.
Honestly what it ends up coming down to is the intro of New Vegas is just off putting to me. The way it starts out is just not as enjoyable as the beginning of 3. The Vault stuff gets old after a few playthroughs but I find it to be more interesting than the Goodsprings stuff, and then once you actually get out and start exploring the early quests in 3 were more enjoyable to me.
My last playthrough of 3 I broke the game and went to Vault 119 before going to GNR. That was fun. Another playthrough I went to Rivet City before GNR.

I don't find the early stuff to be very entertaining, so it's hard for me to get into it. I need to give it another shot, and I might at some point. As I recall it felt like it took 3-4 hours to get to anything fun, and even once I got to the Strip and McCarran I just didn't care as much about the quests in NV as the quests in 3. I still put like 30 hours or more into it, but I never find myself wanting to go back to it like I do 3.

I first rented it from blockbuster (YEAAAAAAAA). Played for a week, put 20 hours in, really screwed up by doing the same sort of thing (rushed into a bad situation without setting my character up very well).
I bought it a week later and did it properly, beat the story, did some side quests.
Then I bought it AGAIN a few years later, this time the full collectors edition, and did some of the DLCs (The Pitt is just broken on PS3, I still haven't done it. I need to do it sometime).
Then I bought it AGAIN on PC during a steam sale and put another 10 hours or so into a playthrough and stopped. Now I'm playing it again.
So TL;DR: the game is so good I rented it, then bought it 3 times, and I've played at least 200+ hours over all my playthroughs. You should definitely pick it up again. Pro-tip: if you have the DLCs and want to be successful, do operation anchorage immediately. It's a bit tedious IMO, but you get super power armor and some really good weapons

I mean from a general game difficulty standpoint. The good options are usually easier to accomplish and they also give better rewards. The bad options usually give worse rewards and are more difficult. The impact of bad deeds is typically stronger than good deeds, meaning that one bad deed requires several good deeds to counteract.

I get what you are saying. For me 3 is the better base game but New Vegas' DLC is much better and overall with the enhancements to combat, I prefer New Vegas.

I've done playthroughs where I completely skip GNR, and if you wanted to, you could possibly go to V119 even right out of the Vault. One of these days, I'll play the PC version as backwards as I can manage to do it.
Goodsprings is a bit railroaded, mainly because unless you know you can seek out Option B in the first place, it appears to only give you one choice to resolve the first tutorial quest.
Heck, the first 5-10 hours (depending on how much side stuff you do) is pretty railroaded, but when the rails end (you remember where this happens) you have really no idea where to otherwise go, other than doing the faction quests (which are more grafted on than anything else, since you have options to skip them completely with the right main quest path). It plays like if F3 made you do the Tutorial Quest from Moira about 3 times through. Then surprise!
Fortunately, the story writers in NV got their shit together for the DLC. OWB is a gem, especially the writing, and if you bother to set up your character with the appropriate skill levels before going in (some of the best lines are when you pass the skill checks).

Melee weapons is fun!
Get the Pyro perk and the Shiskebab and you will be unstoppable.
I recently tried a evil walkthrough, with only one handed small guns.
And no armor allowed. Only a Business suit, glasses and hat.
